Citizen sciences and European missions

04 april 2022

France, who currently leads the presidency of European commission, organized the conference on citizen engagement in European missions in Paris on the 21th of March 2022. This event hosted ministers, experts and representatives of the civil society. Citizen and stakeholders debated about solutions to cope with challenges such as global warming, cancer, low carbon cities, soil pollution and oceans threats. This last ocean mission, named “health of oceans, seas and coastal and continental waters” proposes several working axes, among which the decarbonization, carbon-neutral fishing industries and the oceans pollution. One objective is to reduce plastic discards by 50% by 2030. It is in that context that the Fish&Click project was presented as an example of citizen science. Indeed, this project relies entirely on citizen participation and its success shows that people implication allows collecting data with large temporal and geographical scales. Connecting, mobilizing and giving the means to European citizens and local communities to act for oceans restauration is a real way to reach scientific objectives.
